2. What do I need to bring to the workshops?

All workshops: a pen and notepad.

Two day workshops: The Board’s Supervision Guidelines (download from www.psychreg.health.nsw.gov.au ).  The Supervision Guidelines are regularly updated by the Board; please check that you bring the most recent version (Perhaps it's wise not to download it until the week before the workshop).  You will need your own folder for these and future notes as the supplied workshop notes will come bound.

One day workshops:  Your bound workshop notes, your folder with the latest Supervision Guidelines and list of questions/issues.

3. What is the content of the two day supervision workshops?

The goals of the two day supervision workshop are

-          to develop/extend your understanding of the NSW Psychologists Registration Board’s Registration Guidelines, Supervision Guidelines and supervision program reporting requirements AND

-          to develop/extend your supervision knowledge and skills.

The modules include:

Day One: best practice, goals and tasks, social power, boundaries, models and structure of supervision, role induction, external structure, Form P2, internal structure, needs assessment and contracting, Form P1 ,evaluative processes, Forms R1, R2 and R3.

Day Two: facilitative processes, collaborative problem solving consultation,

supervision triangle, reflective practice group supervision, observational methods, managing problems, key standards certificates, self monitoring/self care.

The content of the one day follow-up workshops is being developed in response to feedback/requests from participants in the two day workshops.  The program is flexible, with opportunities to address issues that have arisen in applying the learning from the two day workshop and to revise issues or skills that are of particular interest to those present at the one day workshop.  You are invited to submit your issues/questions beforehand so the presenter can ensure they are included in the program.

4. Who is eligible to attend the one day follow-up workshop?

Any psychologist who has attended either of the Board’s workshops in 2006/2007 (the one day for experienced supervisors or the two day supervision workshop) or the two day supervision workshop since June 2008 is eligible to attend the one day follow-up workshop.  The reason for this pre-requisite is that the presenter can then assume certain knowledge (e.g. structure of supervision), so that the day does not become a re-presentation of original material for newcomers.

5. Do I need to do any pre-reading?

Pre-reading is highly recommended.  You’ll get a lot more from the workshops if you have prior understanding of the requirements for registration.

For the two day workshop, read the Board’s Supervision Guidelines.

For the one day follow-up workshop, re-read the Board’s Supervision Guidelines, the two day workshop notes, and the articles provided at the two day workshop.

6. Why do the workshops go so late?

The two day workshops run until around 5 pm (perhaps 5.30) on Day 1 and until around 5.30 pm (perhaps 6.00) on Day 2 to allow time for the Supervision Knowledge Test to be completed (one scenario on Day 1 and two scenarios on Day 2).  It is important that you stay until you complete the test.

8. I need to attend a supervision workshop urgently because I have an intern waiting to start.  Is it possible to get into one sooner than the list of available dates?

Workshops are scheduled subject to demand.  Send an email to the Workshop Manager detailing your needs (dates and place).  If there are sufficient requests to cover the costs of an extra workshop, then we will schedule it.  In the meantime, book yourself into the first convenient workshop that is available on the Workshop Registration form.  If an extra workshop is scheduled, then all psychologists who emailed requesting it will be transferred without any transfer fees.

9. What is in the Supervision Knowledge Test?

The test comprises three scenarios that focus on supervision methods and the application of the Board’s registration requirements.  The scenarios assess knowledge of principles – not memory for all the rules.  All issues are addressed during the workshop and you get some practice in responding to scenarios.  It is an open book test.  People generally take 15 to 20 minutes to respond to each scenario.   One scenario is done at the end of Day 1 and the other two at the end of Day 2.  Your answers are self-assessed using a detailed scoring sheet.

There is no test at the one day follow-up workshop.

10. What if I fail the test?

You need a 50% mark to pass.  Almost all psychologists who have attempted the test have passed it (many with high marks).  If you don’t pass, then you know that you’re not ready to be a supervisor.  When you feel ready to try again, enrol to attend another 2 day workshop and re-do the test.

11. What if I miss some of the two day workshop?

The Board requires full attendance to meet the requirements for authorisation as a supervisor.  If you have a crisis and must miss a short period of the workshop, discuss with the presenter how you can cover that material.  If you miss a long period, then you will need to attend another 2 day workshop (see cancellation policy).

12. How do I gain authorisation as a supervisor after I complete the two day workshop?

At the end of Day 2 you’ll be provided with a copy of the Board’s form S1 Application for Authorisation to Practise as a Supervisor.   When you have self-assessed yourself as having passed the test you will complete S1 and hand it to the presenter.  The forms will be submitted to the Board asap and you will receive your authorisation from the Board within two weeks.  If you have not received authorisation within two weeks and you need authorisation quickly to start supervising, then you can email the Board to check your status: workshop@hprb.health.nsw.gov.au.

13. Do I have to wait until I've been registered for 3 years to book the two day workshop?

No, you don’t have to have been registered for 3 years to book for the two day workshop, BUT you do need to have been registered for 3 years by the date you attend the workshop if you want the Board to give you credit for attendance.  If you attend the two day workshop before you've been registered for 3 years and later want to gain authorisation as a supervisor, then you will need to re-pay and re-attend the workshop after you have been registered for 3 years.

14. Can I get PD points with APS by attending these workshops?

The workshops do not carry pre-approved APS PD points, but you can submit your attendance certificate to the APS to be credited with 12 PD points for the two day workshop and 6 PD points for the one day workshop.

15. I'm an experienced supervisor.  I missed attending a one day workshop last year because the dates didn't fit for me.  Why do I now have to do a two day training to gain authorisation?

When the Board introduced Supervision Workshops in 2006 it notified all Psychologists that the one day workshops would be provided only until the end of 2007.    Experienced supervisors are welcome to apply to do a workshop and then apply for authorisation to supervise, but the only workshops available from 2008 are two day workshops.

16. I'm an experienced supervisor.  Can I do the one day follow-up workshop to gain authorisation?

No.  The one day follow-up workshop is a follow-up on the issues that arise in applying learning from the two day workshop.  It is not a substitute for any part of the two day workshop and does not count towards authorisation as a supervisor.

17. I supervise students enrolled in a Masters degree at a University.  Do I have to do the two day supervision workshop to continue to supervise such students?  If it's not compulsory, is there any benefit for me in attending?

The Board’s Supervision Guidelines (2.4) state that: “Psychologists who only supervise Interns enrolled in an approved higher degree are not required to gain Board authorisation as supervisors.  These Supervisors are welcome to attend a supervisor training workshop although it is not mandatory”.

Numerous supervisors who only supervise Interns enrolled in an approved higher degree have attended the two day supervision workshop during 2006-2007.  In general, their feedback has been that they valued the updating in supervision approaches and skills and that understanding the Board’s reporting requirements allowed them to clarify their own assessment/reporting practices regarding their student Interns.

18. I have been supervising students enrolled in Masters degrees at a University for many years.  I'm about to start supervising a psychologist doing the Supervision pathway.  Do I have to do the two day supervision workshop?

Yes.  The Board’s Supervision Guidelines (2.4) state that “Psychologists who supervise Interns in both pathways are required to gain Board authorisation”.

19. I don't have a Paypal account, how can I pay?

If you would like a secure Paypal account you can easily create one.  Just click the Paypal button on the registration form and follow the instructions.  You will then be able to use this Paypal account for many other online purchases.

Alternatively you can pay online directly into our bank account.  Please ensure that you provide identifying information (e.g. surname and PS number) so that we can attribute the payment to you.  We take no responsibility for direct deposits that do not have sufficient identifying information.  (Note that if you attempt to make a direct deposit over the counter at a bank then it is often not possible to submit identifying information).

The other option is to download the form, attach a cheque made out to Viva Wellbeing, and post it to us. (see details on Registration form).  However please note   We are willing to hold a place for you while awaiting receipt of the cheque, but payment must be received within 7 days of your on-line registration or your place will be forfeited.

20. When will my enrolment in a particular workshop be confirmed?

Your enrolment will be confirmed by email as soon as we receive your payment.  Please contact us if you do not receive a confirmation within 3 days of making an online payment and within 5 days of posting your payment.  We will confirm places on receipt of a cheque, but will cancel the place if the cheque bounces.  Confirmation of a new booking will then require new payment plus bank charges for the bounced cheque.

If you have not received confirmation of your enrolment within 7 days of your application then you will need to contact us as your application may have gone astray.  If you don't have confirmation of enrolment then you are NOT enrolled.

21. My employer is paying and it could take some time.  Can I confirm enrolment now and have the payment made later?

Sorry, but no.  We cannot hold a place unless payment has been received.  If your employer is likely to be slow in making the payment, then the safest way to secure a place in the workshop you prefer is to pay yourself and then request a refund from your employer.

22. After my enrolment has been confirmed, can I change to a different workshop?

The change of booking policy is:

-          Full transfer of fee to new workshop if the place you vacate is taken by another psychologist.

-          50% transfer fee if the place you vacate cannot be filled by another psychologist.

23. Do I get a refund if I can't attend?

The cancellation policy is:

-          Refund of 80% of payment if the place you vacate is taken by another psychologist.

-          Refund of 50% of payment if the place you vacate cannot be filled by another psychologist.

24. The workshops used to be free; why do I have to pay?

The Board provided supervision workshops for two years to ensure that there is a sufficient number of authorised supervisors to cover the needs of Interns.  There are now around 1350 authorised supervisors for around 1200 Interns (both approved degree pathway and supervision pathway) in NSW.  The Board is willing to authorise further supervisors if they meet requirements, but does not have the resources to subsidise the costs.  Note that psychologists who attended the Board’s workshops provided their own lunches and handbooks/workshop notes, but these costs are included in the fee for future workshops.
